Certainly in a blog titled Holy Cross Place we will celebrate the triumph of Easter Sunday. In that effort I am sharing a treasured excerpt from an article written by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1958. Reasons for using this excerpt are twofold: (1) the ring of truth and significance of the life, death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ is clear; and (2) contemporary American culture lacks a strong, moral and inspirational voice like Dr. King. Originally titled “Out of the Long Night of Segregation” and published in Advance (February 28, 1958), the article is reprinted in A Testament of Hope: The Essential Writing and Speeches of Martin Luther King, Jr. (Harper One, 1986) under the title “The Current Crisis in Race Relations.”
“Those of us who call the name of Jesus Christ find something at the center of our faith which forever reminds us that God is on the side of truth and justice. Good Friday may occupy the throne for a day, but ultimately it must give way to the triumph of Easter Sunday. Evil may so shape events that Caesar will occupy a palace and Christ a cross, but that same Christ arose and split history into A.D. and B.C., so that even the life of Caesar must be dated by his name.” Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
