When it comes to the question of what it means to be human in order to discern the path of flourishing as a human being, Jesus of Nazareth simply provided the best information possible on the most important matters. A brief look at what insight Jesus brought begins with his confidence in truth being unified, universal and that which conforms to what is real. It was Jesus who said, “… you will know the truth and the truth will set you free.” (The Gospel of John, 8:32) Jesus clearly asserted the truth that God is really there and is the Creator of all that is. Not only this prime factor, but also that God is not silent and has clearly spoken in creation, in Jesus himself and in the Scriptures. Throughout history to the present a significant question is always, “Who speaks for God?” The answer, let God speak for God. The Scriptures make the truth claim to be “inspired by God and profitable for teaching, reproof, correction and training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate and equipped for every good work.” (The Second Letter to Timothy, 3:16, 17) Integrated throughout the teaching of Jesus is the clear message demonstrating all human beings are important, dignified and full of potential as wonderful, complex creations of God himself. It was Jesus who gave a face to the most important matter of God’s eternal love and mercy providing a redemption story leading to what it truly means to be human.
